The Law of Moses/Old Testament : Does it still stand?
Mathew 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach [them], the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Which are the commandments referred to by Jesus here?
Are they the commandments mentioned above this verse referring to the Old Testament (Law of Moses) or the commandments mentioned below this verse the new testament which requires a righteousness above that of the Pharisees?
Those taught that it refers to old testament would see it that way, those taught that it refers to the commandments in chapter 5, 6, and 7 would see it that way.
Lets find out what the Bible says:
Luke 16:16 The law and the prophets [were] until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.
Jesus says that Law and prophets were till John
Zechariah 11:10-13 And I took my staff, [even] Beauty, and cut it asunder, that I might break my covenant which I had made with all the people. And it was broken in that day: and so the poor of the flock that waited upon me knew that it [was] the word of the LORD. And I said unto them, If ye think good, give [me] my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty [pieces] of silver. And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty [pieces] of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD.
This is a prophecy in the old testament where God says that He will break all covenants he made with all people including covenants made with Abraham, Noah, Israel, etc. on the day they put his price as 30 pieces of silver which would then be used for the potter’s field. This was fulfilled at the crucifixion of Jesus.
Mathew 27:9-10 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.
(Jeremiah may have prophesied other things including this which was not recorded in his books but God told it again through Zechariah.)
And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
Jesus starts a new testament or a new covenant.
Opinions from the Bible:
Acts 15: 28, 29 (Jerusalem Church) For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.
Acts 15: 10 (Peter) Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?
Romans 3:20 (Paul) Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law [is] the knowledge of sin.
James 2:10 (James) For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one [point], he is guilty of all.
Luke 16:16 Jesus The law and the prophets [were] until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.
1 John 3:23 (John) And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
The Holy Spirit and Jerusalem church together, Peter, Paul, James speak clear statements regarding the Old Testament law. Jesus says that the law and prophets were till John the Baptist. Apostle John says that the commandment given to us is to love.
Why was old testament given?
1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law [is] the knowledge of sin.
We have knowledge of sin and as examples for us so that we do not repeat the same things like idolatory, lust after evil things, fornication, etc. Read 1 Corinthians 10:6-11
Galatians 3:19 Wherefore then [serveth] the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; [and it was] ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
The law was given for those Israelites before Jesus because of transgressions.
Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
Galatians 3:24-27 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster [to bring us] unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
The law made everyone understand that however hard they try they cannot be righteous but need to have faith in Jesus Christ.
Some Laws in the Old Testament that most Christians do not keep: Leviticus 19:27 Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.
Exodus 21:10, Exodus 22:16, Deuteronomy 14:7-10, Deuteronomy 14:26-29, Deuteronomy 16:1, Deuteronomy 16:10, Deuteronomy 16:13 and many more.
Jude 1:4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.
Hebrew 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
Hebrew 10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Galatians 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:1 [There is] therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Remember that God's Grace has freed us from the Law and enabled us to become his children through faith in and baptism in Christ (Galatians 3:24-27). We do not have rules and regulations but need to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit to be the children of God. We should not do that which we feel is wrong but pray and ask God to guide us in everything.
